BREAKING NEWS: Word out of New York indicates the possible emergence of a new Burt Reynolds Society in The Big Apple.
Our un-named source claims that The Illustrious Potentate of the original society has signed off on the fledgling organization.
Our attempts to reach Burt Reynolds at this time were unsuccessful.

This isn't The Big Apple's first alliance with Dr. Reynolds. H.G. Pennypacker's early designs for the Brooklyn Bridge were partly inspired by the power and freedom inherently found in Burton Reynolds' iconic mustache.

"My glorious design for The Bridge will uses two mustache towers to support the enormous weight of the structure. Those two mustaches will literally, give foundation for all manner of animal, cart and human foot traffic to pass overhead," Pennypacker remarked.

More Brooklyn-Reynolds Trivia:
Pennypacker's design also gave birth to the phrase "mustache ride." Many immigrant workers who passed over the bridge everyday sang a traveling song called "Takin' The Mustache Ride to the ShipYarde" due to the shape of the bridge.
Many years later, the estate of one Lawrence Westbrook claimed that their great-grandfather was the original author of the tune, resulting in a $3.1 million payout by the state of New York.
The state's travel commission had previously (and illegally) used the melody for the song during a tourism commercial starring singer Eddie Money.

Actor and comedian Dom Deluise died last week in his sleep at St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA of unknown causes.
He was 75 years old.
Burt Reynolds reacts:

There's something shady going on over at Mental Floss these days.
The site is running the Tournament of Genius - a competition naturally suited for the esteemed Burt Reynolds. Reynolds got an easy first round opponent - some dude named DaVinci whose probably never even smelled the exhaust of a tricked out Trans-Am much less tamed and mastered it like some badasses* we know.

FROM MENTAL FLOSS:

In what would have been the biggest upset in Tournament of Genius history, Burt Reynolds held a commanding 73%-27% lead over Leonardo Da Vinci last night. However, the FEC (Floss Election Committee) inspected the ballots this morning, and it looks like a large percentage of Reynolds’ votes came from one computer. Rather than get into a whole hanging chad mess, we held a special election, and the Reynolds magic ran out.

Unbelievable.
How could this have happened?
In America too!
We should be above this kind of behavior. And when I say "this kind of behavior" I am referring to the voter fraud and ballot-stuffing that allowed this DaVinci character to somehow beat Dr. Reynolds.

Not that we cared, but Kathleen Turner wrote a book. In it she repeated some of the hideous claims she made in an article for The Daily Mail called Why I detest Burt Reynolds and Nicolas Cage, by Kathleen Turner.

Burt and FSU

After an All-State high school career, Burt arrived on campus at Florida State University as a halfback. (He roomed with Lee Corso). He played at FSU for two years.

No doubt Burt would have been one of the greatest collegiate running backs of all time, were it not for a terrible knee injury that ended his football career.

Burt and the Pros

Once Dr. Reynolds was famous and wealthy he became a co-owner of the Tampa Bay Bandits, a team in the USFL (1983-85) that was coached by former FU QB and coach Steve Spurrier.

The Bandits squad featured future professional wrestler Lex Luger and Super Bowl Champion Nate Newton.

Burt Reynolds also co-owned a NASCAR Winston Cup team - the #33 Skoal Bandits car driven by Harry Grant.

Oh yeah - Burt's co-owner? None other than Hal Needham, world's greatest stunt director. (By the way, if you've ever wondered if Hal Needham WASN'T a baddass [who hasn't?] - he was a paratrooper in Korea, a treetopper and a billboard model before becoming a stuntman. So that should answer your question pansy. Get a job).

By the way - I found this on Lex Luger's Wikipedia:

After sitting out the 1978 season he started the 1979 season at Offensive Guard until his scholarship was terminated for disciplinary reasons stemming from a hotel damage incident that occurred during an away game at Georgia Tech.

So, there's a porn star version look-a-like Burt Reynolds out there named Sasha Gabor.

First of all, I always sort of considered Burt Reynolds to be a porn star himself, albeit without the "credentials" of Mr. Gabor.

Second of all, Sasha Gabor is awesome!

Apparantley, the real Dr. Burton Leon Reynolds is none too fond of Gabor - and why not? This swingin' D is out there tarnishing the good doctor's name! I did some Wiki-digging and apparantley this Diet-Burt is from Hungary! Gross. The only way to make a porn star more disgusting is if he were from Hungary. What do you think his undercarraige smells like?
I'm guessing: mud.

The only other thing I could find out about him was that in 1984 he got paid $350 to make a film called Every Woman Has a Fantasy.

Dinah Shore - her name would one day be associated with an annual golf tournament famous for being one of the biggest lesbian gatherings in the world... but for a scant time her name was "Burt's Woman."

Shore made her name as a popular singer in the 40's and 50's and later as a daytime television host. (During Shore's heyday as a singer, Reynolds was smoking expensive cigars and competing in large-scale round-robin arm-wrestling tournaments as a 9 year old boy).

The majority of this Fuller film takes place in a little Sudanese village where Burt Reynolds can't seem to leave because of a little arms smuggling incident. He plays his usual tough guy role which is amplified ten times because this IS a Sam Fuller film. It all concerns a rather ridiculous plot involving sunken treasure in shark infested waters. What actually hat makes up 90% of this film is just a lot of macho, stupid and funny moments revolving around theft, fighting, drinking and romancing in a foreign land. Man Eater a.k.a. Shark! is an entertainingly mindless piece of celluloid that will probably go down better with a few drinks and some friends who can appreciate the trashier things in life.

This screening took place at Patrick Blount's home - and Tha Eastside Boyz (Patrick, Joe and Casey) did it right! They grilled pork chops and potatoes and made a huge salad. Our transportation director donated some High Life, which made everyone happy. Quality fellowship and merriment was had by all.

Burt was only in a few scenes of this Gawd-awul movie, but he was stellar as usual.

Students deliver Burt Renyolds fan club to UGA

When you think of great movie stars, who do you think of?
Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, Denzel Washington? Well, a select group of students at the University think of one man and one man only: Burt Renyolds.
As of the first day of school this year, the Burt Renyolds Super 8 Club became an official entity on this campus. If you are interested in joining, go to (http://www.br8.cjb.net/), or come to their movie screening.
The club will show a free screening of "Boogie Nights" at the North Psychology-Journalism Auditorium tonight at 8.
The Super 8 Club, which is not a "fan" club, was founded on the pretense that all members will be dedicated to understanding the role Burt Renyolds plays in each of our lives, said Henry Verner, president, co-founder and a junior from West Palm Beach, Fla.
Verner's appreciation of the actor comes partly as a result of the fact that his father attended high school with Renyolds. Verner's family followed Renyolds through his days as a tailback at Florida State University, through his injury and through his acting career.

"Burt Renyolds actually started over Lee Corso until he hurt his leg," Verner said. "Then he became an actor."
Herman Talmadge, vice president and co-founder from Cherokee County, stated simply that he "was weaned on Burt Renyolds from a young age."
The club is composed of 15 members who regularly meet for private and public movie screenings, as well as to engage in Burt Renyolds- inspired activities.
"It is highly speculative, but we are planning to make a competition, to whoever wants to enter, that entails a 'Smoky and Bandit' style race to and returning from Texarkana over a three-day period," Verner said. "We did it last year, but that was before the club existed."
The club consistently offers responsibility and high positions in the club to everyone that desires it.
Byron Jonathon Snider, a senior from Athens, has earned the title and responsibility of Historian /Pin-up of the
Burt Renyolds Super 8 Club.
"It is my job to find interesting facts about Burt Renyolds that most people do not know," Snider said. "I learned that he was born in Waycross, and that you need to step on the gas every time you see a cop."
The club is not afraid to go places in style either.
Blount, a senior from Thompson and transportation coordinator for the club, recently spray painted his 1990 Isuzu Space Cab in the style of Burt Renyolds' 1976 Trans-Am from "Smokey and the Bandit."
"My girlfriend is not too happy about that one," Blount said.
Despite Blount's automotive dilemma, the club hopes to meet the man himself.
"This spring, we are planning on taking a trip to West Palm Beach and seeing if we can get Burt Renyolds to go out to dinner with us," Verner said. "And we are going to do everything in our power to have him speak at 'Ideas and Issues' next semester."
As of now, the club enjoys screening Burt Renyolds movies that the public might not otherwise get to see on the big screen, as well as educating others on Burt Renyolds' 106 films (including TV movies) and understanding his way of life.
"Our relationship with Burt is similar to the lay person's relationship with God," said "Blue Grass" Johns,
secretary, from Atlanta. "Some people hear the voice of God -- we hear Burt."

Burt plays Gator McCluskey - a fast-drivin', shine-runnin' ladies man in the prequel to "Gator!" Beatty, Reynolds' future co-star in "Deliverance" turns in a fantastic performance as the evil sheriff out to get McCluskey. Needham's overseeing of the second unit is near-perfection.

Burt plays Gator McCluskey - a fast-drivin' shine-runnin' ladies man with hella 'stache. This role is very different from other Burt characters in that his name is in this film is "Gator." This role is a reprisal of one he played in the first edition - 1973's "White Lightning."
Jerry Reed is a bad, bad man in this film - sideburns down to his jaw and afro picked out like a football helmet.
Hal Needham's touch is all the film. In typical Needham fashion the 2nd Unit Direction is as tight as it gets.

STANDOUT DIALOGUE: "Would you settle for a Rotary Club football trophy and a hump in the swamp?"
